TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prabowo Subianto highlighted the prevalence of "leaks" in the State Budget in his inaugural address as President of Indonesia on Sunday, October 20, 2024. He blamed it on a culture of collusion between government officials and "naughty businessmen".
“There are too many leaks in our national budget. Deviations, collusion among government officials at all levels with naughty businessmen—this is unpatriotic!” he declared.
According to him, these budgetary leaks have a direct impact on the lives of Indonesians. The Gerindra Party chief patron pointed to the high poverty rate and the reality of numerous students attending school hungry without breakfast as evidence of these failures.
“We still see some of our brothers and sisters who have not enjoyed the fruits of independence,” he lamented.
Thus, the newly inaugurated president for the term 2024-2029 vowed to tackle these issues. He declared that his administration would not be content with mere statistical improvements that do not capture the full picture of the problems facing Indonesia.
“Are we aware that poverty in Indonesia remains too high? Are we aware that our people and children are malnourished, that many citizens cannot find decent jobs?” he said.
According to Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), estimated state losses due to corruption cases over the previous President Jokowi's ten-year administration totaled Rp290 trillion.
This figure, compiled from ICW's annual reports, represents the cumulative losses between President Jokowi's first inauguration in 2014 and the most recent ICW report issued in 2023.
“That figure range is the total from ICW's trend of verdict study data released every year,” Yassar Aulia, ICW Political Corruption Division Staff, explained in a message on October 19. He added that further details could be accessed on the antikorupsi.org website.
Yassar said that the Rp290 trillion represents the estimated state losses from corruption cases with court-calculated damages.
