TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump is currently caught up in a controversy involving Prince Harry. He is being pressured to release the Duke of Sussex's immigration documents, which are said to hold big secrets. The Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, has filed a lawsuit to find out whether Harry hid his drug history when applying for a visa.
Harry, who moved to Montecito, California, in 2020 with his wife Meghan Markle, once revealed in his memoir Spare, published in early 2023, that he had used cocaine, marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms in his youth. In fact, US law requires visa applicants to disclose their drug history. "These documents are of great public interest," said Samuel Dewey, Heritage's attorney, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Heritage Foundation Lawsuit
The Heritage Foundation previously sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after its request for information through the US Freedom of Information Act was denied. Their lawsuit was defeated in court on September 23, 2023, after a judge ruled that Harry's documents should remain secret. However, Heritage is not giving up. Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at Heritage, said they would continue to pressure the government.
"The president has the legal authority to release these documents, and we will press for it," he told the New York Post. The move has drawn support from a number of groups pushing for transparency in the immigration process. With the end of support from the Joe Biden administration, lawyers and members of the Heritage Foundation are also hoping that the new president-elect will overturn the court's decision to keep the documents secret.
Prince Harry's Deportation Threat
In an interview with Nigel Farage on GB News last year, Donald Trump said that if Harry lied on his visa documents, he would not get special privileges. When asked if this meant Harry would have to leave America, Trump replied, "We'll see. If he lied, the appropriate action will be taken."
Trump has previously said that if he is re-elected, he will not give Harry special treatment. "He betrayed the Queen," he said. Trump has also vowed to enforce stricter border controls, including on immigration cases like the one involving Harry.
If the documents are released and Harry is proven to have lied, he could be forced to leave his life in Montecito, California, with Meghan Markle and their two children—even though his wife is an American citizen and the children have dual citizenship. Harry and Meghan have settled in the US since stepping back from royal duties in 2020. Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William, has also been strained.
