TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team managed to defeat Saudi Arabia in the ongoing 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with a score of 2-0. Two goals for Indonesia were scored by the young player, Marselino Ferdinan. Each of Marselino's goals was scored in the 32nd and 57th minutes.
The victory over Saudi Arabia led the Indonesian national team to collect six points from six matches in the 2026 Asian World Cup Qualifiers third round and currently occupy the third position in the Group C temporary standings.
The six points earned by the Garuda squad made Indonesia the most successful Southeast Asian country when competing in the third round of the Asian World Cup Qualifiers, surpassing Vietnam and Thailand.
Career of Marselino Ferdinan
Marselino, born with the name Marselino Ferdinan Philipus on September 9, 2004 in Jakarta. He is a professional Indonesian football player of Ngada-NTT and Surabaya-East Java descent. Currently, he plays as an attacking midfielder for Oxford United in the English Second Division and also represents the Indonesian national team.
Marselino Ferdinan started his football career when he joined the Persebaya Academy in 2019. Within a year, he managed to catch the attention of the coaching staff and was invited to train with the senior team.
Marselino was then introduced by veteran player Aji Santoso to the national football scene at the age of 17. One of his admired skills is his long-range shooting accuracy. He is one of the standout players from the Persebaya academy, alongside other players like Rizky Ridho and Ernando Ari.
Marselino eventually made his debut with the Indonesian U-17 national team in a match against Vietnam in the AFF U-16 Youth Championship. He scored a goal in that match, securing a 2-0 win for Indonesia.
In October 2021, Marsel became a target for the Indonesian U-23 national team. He appeared in friendly matches against Tajikistan and Nepal and in the preparation for the 2022 U-23 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan.
Following that, he made his debut with the senior Persebaya team in the 2021-2022 Liga 1 second-week match against Persikabo 1973. His debut match ended in a 3-1 victory for Persebaya. He then scored his first goal for Bajul Ijo in a 2-2 draw against Arema FC on November 6, 2021.
Due to his outstanding performances, Marselino was awarded the Best Young Player in his first year of career and was included in The Guardian's list of 60 promising young talents.
In 2022, Marselino once again joined the senior Indonesian national team for a friendly match in Bali against Timor Leste, which ended in a 4-1 victory.
At the U-20 level, Marselino also contributed to Indonesia in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers. On September 16, 2022, he scored two goals against Hong Kong U-20, leading Indonesia to a 4-1 and then 5-1 victory.
Not only that, Marselino also impressed at the 2022 AFF Championship, where he scored a goal against the Philippines in the group stage. Thanks to his exceptional performance, Marselino was awarded the 'Best Young Player of the Tournament'.
Consistently impressive, on February 1, 2023, Marselino officially joined the Challenger Pro League or Second Division B club in Belgium, KMSK Deinze. He signed a one-and-a-half-year contract. He made his debut with Deinze in a match against Jong Genk on February 25, coming on as a substitute in the 80th minute to replace Jellert van Landschoot.
After his contract expired at the end of July 2024, Marselino decided to join Oxford United, a second-tier English league club. Marselino Ferdinan was acquired by Oxford United on a free transfer status and signed a two-year contract.
