TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli airstrike killed the Director of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Marwan Al-Sultan. He was the 70th medical personnel to be killed in the last 50 days by Israeli attacks.
Israeli strikes on various locations in Gaza on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 have killed 78 people. According to Wafa, one of the individuals who lost their lives was Marwan Al-Sultan, an important figure who led the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza. He and his children became victims along with his wife.
As cited by Guardian, based on information from Healthcare Workers Watch (HWW), a Palestinian health institution, Al-Sultan was known as a cardiologist with extensive experience. He was the 70th medical personnel to have died due to Israeli attacks in the last 50 days.
Quoting Al Jazeera Arabic, Al-Sultan was not just a hospital head. He was an important source of information about the situation of Palestinians in the isolated northern Gaza region. The late Al-Sultan was known for being outspoken and frequently appealed to the international community to protect the safety of medical personnel, especially when the Israeli army besieged and attacked the Indonesian Hospital, the largest medical facility in northern Gaza.
Diaa Al-Najjar, Al-Sultan's nephew, stated that his uncle worked tirelessly during the conflict. "He kept fighting. Until the last moment, the final moments," Al-Najjar told CBC News on July 2, 2025. "May God give us patience and may God have mercy on our martyrs."
The bodies of Al-Sultan and his family members have been taken to Al-Shifa Hospital. "Gaza has lost a great doctor. He never left the hospital since the war began and urged us to stay and provide humanitarian aid. We don't know what he did to deserve to be killed," said the Head Nurse of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Issam Nabhan.
The United Nations (UN) has recorded that since the war broke out on October 7, 2023, over 1,400 medical personnel have died due to Israeli attacks.
