TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Chair of the Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir emphasized that there was no pressure from anyone in the decision to dismiss the Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong (STY).
Erick conveyed this in a press conference at the Danareksa Tower, Jakarta, Monday, January 7, 2025, when answering questions from journalists. Erick dismissed all assumptions that he was pressured by several parties, from the football mafia to the PSSI Exco, in dismissing STY.
"I don't think all of this is true because you know I am a leader who cannot be pressured," said Erick.
He emphasized that the decision to dismiss STY was purely the best decision that had been carefully considered to realize Indonesia's mission to compete in the 2026 World Cup.
Indonesia's steps towards the 2026 World Cup will be determined by the next four matches in the third qualifying round. Currently, Indonesia is in third place in the Group C standings with six points from six matches.
The teams that finish first and second will automatically advance to the World Cup which will be played in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Meanwhile, the third and fourth place will advance to the fourth qualifying round to win the remaining tickets.
"I believe that what we are doing is all for the good. The point is we have to work hard, we can't just accept the situation and hope for good results," he said.
On the same occasion, Erick Thohir revealed that Indonesia's new coach is from the Netherlands. The new coach will be introduced to the public on Sunday, January 12.
Although it was only officially announced this weekend, Patrick Kluivert is one name that is being widely discussed as the one who will fill the seat left by STY after Fabrizio Romano said "here we go."
