TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PSSI Chair Erick Thohir officially announced the termination of cooperation with Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong who has coached the Garuda squad since January 2020 and whose contract is still running until 2027.
"We see the need for a leader who is better able to implement the strategies agreed upon by the players and good communication," said Erick at the Danareksa Tower, Central Jakarta on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Erick said that Indonesian national team manager Sumardji had communicated PSSI's decision with the South Korean coach. He said that regarding the letter of termination of cooperation, STY, as he is usually called, had received it.
"The letter has been received regarding our relationship that has ended and I express my gratitude," said Erick. "We have also found a replacement, it has arrived on the 11th and there will be a press conference on the 12th."
Erick said about the importance of highlighting the composition of the new coach because coaching work is not just leadership but teamwork. The man who also serves as Minister of State-Owned Enterprises claims that STY's replacement coach will be accompanied by a high-quality assistant coach.
"We will overcome all shortcomings because the target is the World Cup. The national team belongs to Indonesia, there is no perception of Erick Thohir or the coach. But how can we measure everything so that the results can be consistent," he said.
During his almost four years coaching the Indonesian national team, the 54-year-old coach was able to bring the team to the runner-up position in the 2020 AFF Cup, then the bronze medal at the 2021 SEA Games. Next, he again brought Indonesia to finish as runner-up in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup, and was able to bring the team to the group stage of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup.
Shin Tae-yong guided Indonesia first to secure a position in the semifinals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, and then qualified for the 2027 Asian Cup. Finally, his squad, which was strengthened by a number of naturalized players, was able to qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The South Korean coach is recorded as having led the senior Indonesian national team matches 57 times and was responsible for the U-23 national team matches 21 times. He also handled the U-20 national team matches 14 times and the U-19 national team matches 18 times.
