TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A rare phenomenon called the Black Moon will appear at the end of this year. According to an astronomer from the Bosscha Observatory, Yatny Yulianti, the celestial event can be witnessed from Indonesia on December 31, 2024 at 05:27 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). "The phenomenon occurs at one time, only we on the surface of the earth observe it at a different time because of the difference in time zones," he told Tempo, Saturday, December 28, 2024.

According to Yatny, the Black Moon phenomenon does not always occur at the end of the year. It can also occur at other times, such as in the middle of the year. Because it will appear at the end of the year, the Black Moon can be called the 13th new moon throughout 2024. "The period occurs every 33 months," he said.

Astronomically, said Yatny, the Black Moon event is nothing special. However, the attraction of this phenomenon is its rare appearance. "Similar to the solar eclipse phenomenon which does not occur every month," he said.

Astronomy activist from the Langit Selatan community, Avivah Yamani, said that the term Black Moon refers to the appearance of a new moon that occurs twice within a calendar month. Currently, it is December 2024. The appearance of the new moon is usually used as a reference for changing months in the Islamic or Hijri calendar.

According to Avivah, physically, the moon appears between the sun and the earth. The moon rises and sets almost simultaneously with the sun. Because its appearance is difficult to see directly with the eye, the second new moon within a month is called the Black Moon.

The appearance of a double new moon in the same calendar month is the result of accumulation. Avivah tries to provide an illustration of her calculations like this. The phase between new moons, like the full moon, is 29.5 days. So it appears 12 times a year with a total of 354 days. The total time of the lunar cycle is shorter than a calendar year which is 365.25 days.

The remaining accumulated days, said Avivah, then allow the full moon to occur twice in one calendar month or called the second full moon blue moon. Likewise, the new moon phase will appear twice, such as on December 31, 2024.
