TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that his company will not be sold to Elon Musk, who previously made a $97.4 billion or around Rp1,591 trillion offer to take over the non-profit organization that controls OpenAI.
Responding to the offer, Altman immediately responded via the X platform on Monday, February 10, 2025, "No thanks, but we'll buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."
So far, Reuters reports that OpenAI's board of directors has not received an official offer from Musk, although his lawyer, Marc Toberoff, claims that the offer document has been sent to OpenAI's external legal counsel at the firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. However, the law firm has not responded to a request for comment.
Toberoff said that the offer was presented in the form of a very detailed four-page letter of intent to buy OpenAI's assets. The document was signed by Musk and a number of other investors and addressed directly to OpenAI's board of directors.
However, Altman emphasized that OpenAI would not accept the offer. "I have no comment. I mean, it’s ridiculous,” he told Reuters at an AI summit in Paris on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
He also accused Musk’s offer of being an attempt to disrupt OpenAI. “The company is not for sale. This is just another tactic to disrupt us,” he said. In an internal message to OpenAI employees, Altman said that the company’s board, while not yet formally reviewing Musk’s offer, still planned to reject it in the interests of OpenAI’s mission.
Meanwhile, Musk has remained adamant that OpenAI must return to its founding principles as an organization focused on public safety and good. “It’s time for OpenAI to return to being the open-source force focused on safety and good that it once was. We will make sure that happens,” Musk said in a statement.
