Rinjani Cable Car Project Set to Proceed

1 month ago 58

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Construction of the cable car to Mount Rinjani from Karang Sidemen Village in the North Batukliang District of Central Lombok will proceed. Previously, the Head of the Central Lombok Regional Development Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency (Bapperida), Lalu Wiranata, had stated that the project was cancelled due to the withdrawal of investors.

The Head of the Tourism Office of Central Lombok, Lalu Sungkul, stated that the cable car investors still intend to proceed with the construction. However, at present, the investors are waiting for the validation or assessment of the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) permit.

Investors Did Not Withdraw

The construction of the cable car has been planned since 2013, and the groundbreaking was conducted approximately two years ago. After discussing with the investors, it was revealed that they are currently awaiting government approval of the Amdal permit.

"These investors have never left Lombok because their office is in Gunung Sari, West Lombok," he said in Lombok on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. "They have paid Rp5 billion as a guarantee for the forest utilization," he said.

He met with the investors who questioned why they were considered to have vanished when they were waiting for validation. "They did not vanish," he emphasized.

He mentioned that once the Amdal validation is completed by the third party managing it, the investors will immediately proceed with the construction. On the other hand, he also conveyed obstacles related to the construction due to changes, although the details of the changes were not specified.

"This cable car is the only business that does not harm the environment, as it only uses a single pole with a height of 35 meters," he said.

Trillion Rupiah Investment

He hopes this cable car will encourage people to find other jobs instead of engaging in illegal logging activities. He used Switzerland as an example because almost every village there has a cable car. Since it is a mountainous area, cable cars are highly favored by locals and tourists.

"For the Mount Rinjani cable car, the investment reaches trillions of rupiah, around Rp15 trillion including accommodation," he said.

Previously, the Head of Central Lombok Bapperida, Lalu Wiranata, stated that from the coordination with the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Provincial Government, it was found that there is still no clarity regarding when the construction of the cable car will commence. He concluded that the construction of the cable car was currently cancelled.

"The investor for the construction of the cable car has disappeared, so for now, we can say it's cancelled. However, we have reported it to the NTB Provincial Government so that there can be further follow-up, which is why we are currently seeking investors to build this cable car," he said.

End Point Does Not Reach the Summit

This cable car will be built from the community forest area in Karangsidmen Village towards the foothills of Mount Rinjani, not far from the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) area. The length of the Rinjani cable car is approximately 10-15 kilometers.

This cable car will facilitate elderly tourists or those with physical limitations. However, the endpoint of this cable car does not reach the peak of Mount Rinjani or Lake Segara Anak. The Rinjani peak is still about two kilometers away. It is 3,726 meters above sea level.
