TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia strongly condemns the attack on Indonesian peacekeepers in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and awaits information from the UN Secretariat regarding those responsible, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said on Tuesday.
UNIFIL reported the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper on March 29 after a projectile hit one of its locations.
On Monday, the mission said that two other Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in an attack on their patrol vehicle in the Bani Haiyyan area.
"Russia strongly condemns all attacks against UNIFIL contingents, regardless of who carried them out," Nebenzia said at a UN Security Council meeting.
He added that Moscow hoped to soon receive full information from the UN Secretariat, including details on those responsible.
The diplomat also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured peacekeepers a speedy recovery.
The escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began on March 2, when the Lebanese movement resumed rocket attacks on Israeli territory amid a rapidly deteriorating regional situation.
Israel then launched a large-scale offensive into Lebanon, including the country's southern region, the Beqaa Valley, and the Beirut suburbs. On March 16, the Israeli military officially announced the launch of a ground operation in southern Lebanon.
