TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Game company Sega has confirmed that it will no longer release mini consoles. This decision means there will be no revival of Saturn or Dreamcast. Quoted from Antara, IGN reported on Monday, December 23, 2024 that the Japanese game company has released a number of consoles, based on the Sega Genesis, but so far has not continued the trend with a Mini version of the 1994 Saturn or the 1998 Dreamcast.
Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi said in an interview with The Guardian that the company would see potential in planning new products. "I'm not going in the Mini direction. I want to embrace modern gamers," he said.
"We are not a retro company. We value our heritage very much, but at the same time we want to provide something new. Otherwise, we will become history. That is not our goal," said Shuji Utsumi.
Despite saying no to a new mini console, Sega still plans to revive classic games with a modern touch. The series of games in the Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Virtua Fighter franchises are in the works.
About Sega
Sega is a Japanese game company that has gone global with various games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Angry Birds, Phantasy Star, Puyo Puyo, Super Monkey Ball, Yakuza.
Quoted from the Sega website, this company started from Sega Corporation as a pioneer to become the Sega Group. This company covers everything from content creation for consoles and arcade games, to toys, anime, and other entertainment fields.
The history of the Sega company began on June 3, 1960, when Nihon Goraku Bussan Co., Ltd. was founded. Furthermore, this company was merged with other companies such as Nihon Kikai Seizo Co., Ltd. (1964), and Rosen Enterprises, Ltd (1965) and finally its name was changed to SEGA Enterprises, Ltd.
In 1969, Sega became a subsidiary of the American conglomerate, Gulf and Western Industries, Inc. Sega expanded its market by establishing Sega Europe, Ltd. to market commercial arcade machines to Europe. Continuing to 1985, Sega Enterprises, Inc. (USA) was established to market commercial arcade machines to America. In 1986, Sega of America, Inc. was formed to market consoles to America.
Sega was listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1988. In this year they also released the 16-bit home video game console Mega Drive (Sega Genesis). Quoted from Antara, through this Mega Drive Sega gained its popularity in 1991 when the Sonic the Hedgehog game was launched and introduced as Sega's mascot. In 2018, this 16-bit console is still remembered as one of the second best retro consoles after the Super Nintendo, based on a survey released by Retro Gamer magazine in 2018.
In 1994 the 32-bit home video game console, Sega Saturn was released by the company and four years later the Dreamcast debuted. Sega released the first console-based online RPG, Phantasy Star Online in 2000.
The Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) series first debuted on the console in 2005. In this year there was the purchase of American game developer, Creative Assembly. Followed by the purchase of American game developer, Sports Interactive in 2006. The next few years were filled with the launch of games such as Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games™ (Beijing 2008); online RPG, Phantasy Star Online 2, Puyopuyo!! Quest, and Chain Chronicle.
In 2015, Sega Corporation was restructured into Sega Group and merged with Sega Networks Co., Ltd. The console and digital services were re-established as Sega Games, and the amusement machine division was re-established as Sega Interactive.
A year later, the original Sonic the Hedgehog game was inducted into The Strong Museum Hall of Fame in America in 2016. Sega also became the first Japanese console manufacturer to sell directly in the Taiwanese market. Another achievement was achieved by Rieko Kodama, a Sega game artist who received the Pioneer Award at the 2019 Game Developers Choice Awards. Sega Fave Corporation was established through the merger of Sega's Amusement Machine business and Sega Toys Co., Ltd.
