TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Questions surrounding Shin Tae-yong's future as the Indonesian National Team coach were resolved on Monday, January 6, 2025, with the Indonesian Football Association’s (PSSI) decision to conclude his contract.
Shin Tae-yong was appointed as the national team coach in December 2019 during Mochamad Iriawan's tenure as PSSI General Chair. He succeeded interim coach Yeyen Tumena, who had replaced Simon McMenemy.
While Shin Tae-yong's five-year tenure in Indonesia did not yield any championship trophies, it would be inaccurate to say he made no contributions to Indonesian football. The former South Korean National Team coach, who also led his nation at the 2018 World Cup, oversaw several notable achievements during his time with Indonesia.
In his first major tournament with the team, Shin Tae-yong led Indonesia to the 2020 AFF Cup final. Unfortunately, Indonesia lost 0-4 in the first leg and drew 2-2 in the second leg against Thailand, resulting in a runner-up finish.
At the 2021 SEA Games, Shin Tae-yong's team did not reach the final, losing to Thailand. However, they secured a bronze medal by defeating Malaysia in the third-place match.
In 2022, he successfully guided the Indonesian national team to qualify for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup finals. During the qualifying phase, Shin Tae-yong's team achieved a perfect record, with victories over Vietnam, Timor Leste, and Hong Kong.
Shin Tae-yong also led Indonesia to the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup final, where they were defeated by Vietnam in a penalty shootout. In the final round of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan, the team did not progress beyond the group stage, with a 0-2 loss to Iraq, a 1-0 win against Syria, and a 0-0 draw with host Uzbekistan.
In early 2024, Shin Tae-yong achieved a significant milestone by guiding the team through the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, following a 1-3 loss to Iraq, a 1-0 victory over Vietnam, and another 1-3 loss to Japan.
Indonesia qualified for the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams. However, their journey ended with a 4-0 defeat to Australia.
Shin Tae-yong also led the national team to a fourth-place finish at the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. After qualifying from the group stage as runners-up, Indonesia achieved a dramatic victory over South Korea in the quarter-finals. They were then defeated by Uzbekistan 0-2 in the semi-finals.
Another significant achievement under Shin Tae-yong was securing qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup finals in November 2023, after finishing second in the qualifying phase behind Iraq. Furthermore, Shin Tae-yong oversaw a considerable improvement in Indonesia's FIFA ranking, rising from 173rd when he first arrived to 129th.
