Spanish PM: Attacks on UN Forces in Lebanon Must Stop

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has insisted that attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) must stop.

"Lebanon has not chosen this war, and its sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected," Sanchez wrote on X, as quoted by Anadolu and cited by Antara, after a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Monday.

Expressing Spain's support and solidarity with Lebanon, he said Spanish troops in UNIFIL were doing a "commendable work."

"Attacks against the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission are intolerable and must cease immediately," Sanchez said.

UNIFIL has been operating in southern Lebanon since 1978, and its mandate was extended under Security Council Resolution 1701 following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israel has been carrying out airstrikes and ground offensives in southern Lebanon since a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since November 2024.

Since then, Lebanese authorities say at least 1,497 people have been killed and more than 4,400 injured in Israeli attacks.
