TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sutardi, a resident of Kebumen, Central Java, is currently trading in food seasoning ingredients at Palmerah Market, West Jakarta. He complained about the increase in the price of staple food or basic food ingredients ahead of the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year (Nataru) holidays. He said that the food ingredients that experienced price increases were shallots, garlic, and cayenne pepper.

"For shallots, since yesterday there has been a month (price increase), the price of shallots has gone up," said Sutardi when interviewed by Tempo at Palmerah Market, West Jakarta on Sunday, December 22, 2024.

He said the price of peeled shallots is currently Rp45,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, Sutardi continued, the price of peeled garlic per kilogram has reached Rp50,000.

According to him, the price of shallots and garlic has actually increased in the past two months. Sutardi said that the increase in the price of basic ingredients has also affected people's purchasing power.

The price of cayenne pepper to curly red chilies has also increased ahead of the Nataru holidays. Sutardi said the price of curly red chilies is currently Rp60,000 per kilogram, while the price of red cayenne pepper per kilogram is currently Rp80,000.

"It hasn't been a month (of the increase in the price of staple foods), in fact, for cayenne pepper, it's been weeks," he said.

However, Sutardi stated that other food commodities still have normal prices. He mentioned these ingredients such as wheat flour, coconut milk, and spices that are not widely sought after by the public.

"It's still normal. It's still normal (other staple foods), for the others, for the spices, it's still normal. It's still normal, yes," said Sutardi.

Meanwhile, based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on staple foods on December 22, 2024, there has been an increase evenly. Shallots are currently priced at Rp40,570 per kilogram, and garlic bulbs at Rp42,500 per kilogram.

The prices of curly red chilies and red cayenne peppers have also increased according to data from BPS. Curly red chilies currently have a price of Rp38,590 per kilogram and the price of red cayenne pepper per kilogram has reached Rp47,290.
