TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra passed a vote of no confidence in the parliament on Wednesday. She has survived the opposition's attack for two days and reassured the stability of the ruling coalition.
As reported by Reuters, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest prime minister of Thailand and the daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, received support from 319 of the 488 attending members of parliament. However, she was criticized during the parliamentary debate for not meeting the requirements, lacking economic knowledge, tax avoidance, and taking instructions from her influential father and political figure, Thaksin Shinawatra.
The vote of no confidence is an early test of the prime minister's mandate. She came under public scrutiny after replacing her ally Srettha Thavisin after he was impeached and removed by the court for ethical violations.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 38, is the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to hold the top position. She dismissed all allegations and insisted that she is giving her best for the country and should be judged based on her work, not her family's relationship.
The voting on Wednesday indicated that Paetongtarn remains in a difficult position amidst Thailand's low economic growth. The government led by the Pheu Thai party and its predecessors has all been led or controlled by Thaksin.
This coalition has been overthrown through the court or military coup, highlighting the deep-seated animosity between Thaksin Shinawatra and the conservatives. Paetongtarn insisted that her government is not under anyone's influence. Meanwhile, Thaksin Shinawatra asserted that he has retired and only offers advice.
