TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of Indonesian National Police personnel are guarding the area around the National Monument, Central Jakarta, at the 212 Grand Reunion in 2024. "The security personnel amounted to 2,489," said the Head of Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Besar Ade Ary Syam Indradi when confirmed on December 1, 2024.
Ary detailed that the number consists of 1,937 task force personnel from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, 110 task force personnel from the Police Resort, and 442 personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Jakarta Provincial Government. This annual reunion carries the theme 'Moral Revolution for a Blessed Indonesia and Free Palestine' scheduled to take place from 03:00 to 08:00 local time.
According to Ade, the security measures targeting the main area at the National Monument prioritize preemptive and preventive activities. "To ensure a conducive national security stability for the event to proceed safely, orderly, and smoothly," Ade explained. He also advised the organizers of the 212 Grand Reunion to adhere to the applicable regulations.
The 212 Action is one of the significant demonstrations in Indonesia that took place on December 2, 2016. Led by Rizieq Shihab along with the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), this action attracted thousands of people to fill up the National Monument grounds and the Sudirman-Thamrin roads. This action was carried out to demand an investigation into the religious blasphemy case conducted by the then Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok.
Ade Ary also urged the orators and field coordinators to express their opinions politely. "There should be no hate speech and provocative statements that could disturb national security," he advised. Ade also reminded the reunion participants to take care of public facilities and respect road users around the National Monument.
According to Ade's statement, traffic diversion will be done situationally. This means that traffic police will consider the dynamics on the field. "If the number of participants and escalations increase, road closures will be implemented. If the number of participants is not significant, traffic will flow as usual," said Ade.
For residents who are not involved around the Monas area, Ade suggests finding alternative routes to prevent traffic congestion.
