TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three pairs of Jakarta Governor candidates unanimously agreed to continue the giant sea wall project which is one of the national strategic programs or PSN of the central government. This idea emerged when the Jakarta Governor candidates participated in the final debate at Hotel Sultan on Sunday, November 17, 2024.

At that time, the panelists asked about the candidates' stance on the PSN project and solutions to address the increasingly declining land conditions. Jakarta Governor candidate number 3, Pramono Anung, was the first to respond.

In his opportunity, Pramono stated that he would adhere to principles and follow the central government's decision to continue this giant sea wall project. He said that the project aims to create sea defense and mitigate coastal floods.

Moreover, he said, the Jakarta government still has a responsibility to complete the approximately 11.1 kilometers of this giant sea wall project. However, he stated that he would modify this project by adding the concept of giant mangrove wall.

"We will continue it by adding the concept of giant mangrove wall for environmental sustainability," said Pramono, on Sunday, November 17, 2024.

In response to Pramono's answer, Jakarta Governor candidate number 1, Ridwan Kamil, agreed that the construction of the giant sea wall was an important step. However, he emphasized that the government should prioritize social, economic, and environmental justice principles in building the project.

"The key is dialogue with residents, NGOs, and Walhi must be involved," he said. According to him, this giant sea wall serves not only as a dam but also as an area for social space. That area, he said, should be able to benefit the wider community.

Jakarta Governor candidate number 2, Dharma Pongrekun, also expressed similar views. According to him, the government has no other choice but to continue this project.

"However, it must prioritize humans as the center of attention, especially coastal communities like fishermen," he said.

He highlighted the condition of fishermen who incur losses of up to Rp26 million per day due to this giant sea wall project. He suggested that the government should also help fishermen who are victims of this project by providing annual compensation of Rp137 billion.

"We hope that the central government will listen and ensure that coastal communities are not disadvantaged," he said.
