TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three Javan leopards (Panthera pardus) were caught on tape by camera traps in the Mount Ciremai National Park (TNGC) area. All three are known to be male, two of which have black (panther) spotted patterns and one has a light spotted pattern.
Head of the TNGC Center Toni Anwar said that the presence of the three leopards was monitored through monitoring activities carried out from June to December 2024.
Origin of the Leopards
Toni explained that based on their origins, Javan leopard individuals in the TNGC area can be divided into two types. Each individual is native, namely animals native to the Mount Ciremai area and individuals resulting from introductions, namely animals that have been released or translocated from other locations.
The first Javan leopard introduced to TNGC in 2019 was named Slamet Ramadhan, a male with a panther pattern. In addition, there is Rasi, a female with a light spotted pattern through a release carried out in 2022.
Slamet Ramadhan was last monitored by a camera trap in April 2023. Slamet Ramadhan has not been detected again by a camera trap in 2024. Meanwhile, Rasi was successfully monitored in July 2024.
"The number of Javan leopard individuals in the TNGC area that were successfully monitored or detected during 2024 was four, namely three native animals and one introduced animal, namely Rasi," said Toni.
Key Species of TNGC
Toni explained that the Javan leopard is one of the key species in TNGC. Even though its number and biomass are relatively small, the existence of this key species is very important for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and cannot be replaced by other species.
The Javan leopard is an animal that lives alone and is territorial, marking its territory with feces, urine marks, and scratches on trees. They also have a sharp sense of sight and smell and tend to avoid humans.
Although instinctively Javan leopards will tend to avoid humans. However, to maintain security and safety, especially for climbers, they are asked to remain vigilant.
"Climbing procedures must still be followed," said Toni.
These procedures include adhering to climbing on time (07:00 to 11:00 WIB), following the designated climbing route, maintaining the sustainability of the area and reporting to officers or managers of the climbing route if they find signs of the presence of Javan leopards.
