1. Sri Mulyani Says Capital Market Education Should Start at Elementary School
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said capital market education should start as early as primary school, as part of the efforts to strengthen the capital market by improving public literacy about stocks.
She retold the story of her introduction to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). According to the State Treasurer, she was introduced to IDX during her college days, similar to the chair of Financial Services Authority (OJK) Mahendra Siregar and Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo.
2. DWP Extortion Case Harms Indonesia's Diplomacy, Says Expert
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the International Relations Department at Padjadjaran University, Arfin Sudirman, responded to the extortion case against some Malaysian audience of the Djakarta Warehouse Project, or DWP 2024. The Malaysian audience was extorted a sum of money by Indonesian police members.
Arfin said the case harms Indonesia’s diplomacy, especially in the aspect of law enforcement. “Diplomacy is not only about the image Indonesia presents for other countries, but [the case] will also impact [international] cooperations related to law enforcement,” Arfin said in a written statement on Thursday, January 2.
3. Several New Levies Increase, In Addition To 12 Percent VAT May Raise Public Spending
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian people's spending has the potential to increase in 2025 because they have to pay several new levies and certain tariff increases. The 12 percent VAT increase on a number of goods and services is one of them. President Prabowo Subianto officially announced the policy during a press conference at the Ministry of Finance, on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
"Today the government has decided that the increase in the VAT rate from 11 percent to 12 percent will only apply to luxury goods and services. I repeat for clarity, the increase in VAT from 11 percent to 12 percent is only imposed on luxury goods and services," President Prabowo said. In addition to the VAT rate increase, the following is a list of levies that must be paid or are in the process of being determined by the government.
