2 months ago 43

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) is set to receive two more electric rail train (KRL) sets from China this week. These new trainsets, manufactured by PRC Qingdao Sifang, will arrive at Tanjung Priok Port, bringing the total number of imported Chinese KRL trains in Indonesia to nine, with seven already operational.

Asdo Artriviyanto, President Director of PT KCI or KAI Commuter, confirmed the arrival, stating that after reaching Indonesia, the new trainsets will undergo a 2,000-meter test run.

In addition to the Chinese imports, KCI is also utilizing domestically manufactured train carriages from PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA). Currently, four of 16 planned INKA trainsets are in production, with two already in transit and two undergoing testing.

"These will be completed in stages in October and December," Asdo announced at a press conference in Central Jakarta on Monday, July 14, 2025.

Asdo noted a growing trend in KRL ridership. In the first semester of 2025, the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) commuter line (KRL) transported 166,432,692 passengers, marking a 6.13% increase from 156 million in 2024. Bogor Station recorded the highest usage, serving 8,888,669 passengers.

Approximately 1 million passengers use the KRL daily, with a peak of 1.3 million riders on June 5, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Merak KRL line carried 2,206,671 passengers in the first semester of 2025, a 4.77% increase over the 2,106,275 passengers during the same period last year. The Merak line saw its highest daily volume on April 7, 2025, with 17,054 passengers. Furthermore, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Basoetta) train recorded 1,062,363 passengers.

As of February 1, 2025, KCI has also increased its trip frequency to 1,048 services, up from 1,063 trips in the previous period.
