TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, on Monday, March 17, 2025, claimed that a significant number of countries are willing to provide peacekeeping forces in Ukraine if a peace agreement with Russia is achieved.
More than 30 countries are expected to be involved in what is called the 'willing coalition' to support Ukraine, the spokesperson said as reported by Reuters.
"The ability to contribute will vary, but this will be a significant force, with a large number of countries providing troops," the spokesperson told reporters.
Prior to this, as reported by Daily Mail, Starmer said that British troops could be deployed to Ukraine as peacekeepers for years to secure the country if the war with Russia ends.
Senior government officials said that the British troops' mission in the country under a ceasefire agreement would be open due to the need to prevent Vladimir Putin from continuing the battle.
Discussing the deployment of British troops, a British source told Times: "This will be a long-term commitment, we are talking about years.
"For as long as it's necessary to maintain the peace agreement and to deter Russia."
This statement was made by Starmer after US President Donald Trump said he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Meanwhile, a meeting of European military chiefs will take place in London on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
The call, announced by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, comes as Putin continues to reject the U.S.-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.
Starmer accused Putin of trying to 'delay' the ceasefire, while French President Emmanuel Macron said the Russian president seemed insincere in seeking peace.
Putin is also likely to object to any agreement involving European or NATO forces being placed in Ukraine, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sees this as essential to prevent future Russian aggression.
Although Zelensky has accepted the unconditional ceasefire proposed by the US, Putin said Ukraine must agree to abandon its ambitions to join NATO and cede the territories already held by Russia before the 2022 invasion.
On Sunday, Witkoff insisted that Putin is making 'constructive efforts' and that the upcoming call with Trump indicates there is 'positive momentum'.
