UN Accuses Israel of Still Obstructing Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

1 day ago 21

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations reports that Israel has denied all six humanitarian aid missions it coordinated for Gaza, further exacerbating the dire conditions faced by Palestinian civilians in the blockaded area.

"As for the occupying power, Israel, it must agree to allow and facilitate the aid that is urgently needed," said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric at a press conference on Wednesday, as quoted by Anadolu.

"Since last week, about 900 truckloads were submitted for Israeli approval, and 800 were approved, but just over 500 could be offloaded on the Israeli side of Kareem Shalom," he said.

He said that even fewer made it into the Palestinian side, where they and their partners were able to collect just over 200, constrained by insecurity and restricted access.

He also noted that fewer Palestinian trucks are needed to pick up the cargo, so "the offloading is not being done on a one-for-one basis with trucks that are unloaded on the Israeli side."

Citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Dujarric reiterated that "aid must flow in large quantities through the various crossings into Gaza."

Dujarric emphasized that Israel has blocked UN efforts to deliver the aid.

"Israeli authorities also continue to deny our attempts to coordinate humanitarian movements inside Gaza, including one to retrieve fuel from Rafah today. Overall, all six coordinated movements were denied to the United Nations today," he said.

When asked if Israel is deliberately obstructing aid, Dujarric replied, "You have to ask them what their motivation is, but I can tell you, they sure aren't making it easy for us."

He also warned that the refugees "lack tents, they lack tarpaulins, they lack food, they lack water, and they lack many other basic necessities."
