TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said the families of missing Syrian prisoners deserve answers and to know what happened to their loved ones. Al-Kheetan told the conference that High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk also stressed the importance of this in Syria, for those still missing and their loved ones.
“Since the fall of the government of former President Bashar Al-Assad almost two weeks ago, we have seen footage of hundreds of prisoners coming out of prisons that are now open,” Al-Kheetan said.
“Some expressed joy at being able to feel the sunlight, but others were shocked after years of torture and inhumane treatment and were unable to express their feelings,” he added.
Al-Kheetan said the families remained distressed because they had still not found their loved ones.
“They deserve all the answers about the fate and whereabouts of their relatives, and to know the circumstances of their disappearance. They also need mental health and psychosocial support,” he said.
He said transitional justice and societal trust-building based on human rights would be crucial for Syria’s future. Turkey will deploy a team of human rights officers to Syria next week to support the existing UN presence on human rights issues and efforts to ensure that the transition is inclusive and in accordance with international law.
