UN-Linked Diplomat Quits, Alleges Nuclear Strike Scenario Against Iran

9 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A senior diplomat linked to the United Nations has resigned after alleging that the international body is preparing for a scenario involving the possible use of nuclear weapons against Iran.

Mohamad Safa, who served for nearly 12 years as the Permanent Representative of the Patriotic Vision Organization (PVA) to the United Nations, announced his resignation on Friday, March 27, 2026.

Allegation of Internal Leak

According to a report by Middle East Eye, Safa said he resigned in order to disclose what he described as critical information. The PVA is a non-governmental organization with special consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Safa accused several senior UN officials of no longer acting in the institution’s interests, but instead serving specific lobbying groups.

I don't think people understand the gravity of the situation as the UN is preparing for possible nuclear weapon use in Iran… I gave up my diplomatic career to leak this information. I suspended my duties so as not to be part of or a witness to this crime against humanity,” Safa said.

Warning Over Potential Humanitarian Impact

In a social media post on March 29, Safa shared a photo of Tehran and warned of the humanitarian consequences if the city were attacked.

This is a picture of Tehran,” he wrote. “For you uneducated, untraveled, never-served, warhawks licking your chops at the thought of bombing it. It's not some low population desert.”

"There are families, children, family pets. Regular working class people with dreams. You're sick to want war. Tehran is a city of nearly 10,000,000 people. Imagine nuking Washington, Berlin, Paris, London, or beyond, bombed with nuclear weapons," he added.

His remarks come amid rising global concern over the possibility of wider conflict in the Middle East.

WHO Prepares for Worst-Case Scenario

As reported by Politico, officials at the World Health Organization (WHO) said they are preparing for a worst-case scenario should the conflict escalate further.

WHO Regional Director Hanan Balkhy said the gravest concern is a nuclear incident.

The worst-case scenario is a nuclear incident, and that's something that worries us the most,” Balkhy said, warning that the effects could last for decades, both regionally and globally.

She added that the WHO is preparing for a broad range of nuclear-related contingencies, including attacks on nuclear facilities and the possible use of nuclear weapons.

IAEA Warning and Iran’s Response

A separate warning was also issued by former International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, who said he could not entirely dismiss the possibility of nuclear weapons being used.

Should I one hundred percent exclude it? No. Do I pray every night that it doesn't? Yes,” ElBaradei said.

"If you have a crazy leader and they feel that they are losing, I don't exclude it."

Amid the growing tensions, some Iranian lawmakers have begun urging the government to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, said Iran’s membership in the treaty no longer benefits the country.
