UNIFIL and Hezbollah Accuse Israel of Violating Ceasefire

TEMPO.CO, JakartaUN peacekeepers in Lebanon have accused Israel of flagrant violations of a 2006 Security Council resolution that has been the basis for a ceasefire with Hezbollah since November 2024.

As reported by Al Arabiya, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem also warned that their patience with Israeli violations could run out before the end of the 60-day ceasefire.

The Israeli-Hezbollah ceasefire came into effect on November 27, 2024. However, the ceasefire has been marred by violations by both sides.

"This morning, peacekeepers observed (Israeli military) bulldozers destroying the blue barrels marking the withdrawal line between Lebanon and Israel in Labbouneh, as well as an observation tower belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces right next to the UNIFIL position there," the peacekeepers said.

"The deliberate and direct destruction by (the military) of clearly identifiable UNIFIL property and infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces constitutes a flagrant violation of Resolution 1701 and international law."

UNIFIL troops, represented on the panel overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire, called on all parties to refrain from any action, including the destruction of civilian property and infrastructure, which could trigger clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Lebanese troops will deploy alongside UN peacekeepers in the south as Israeli troops withdraw over a 60-day period. Hezbollah will withdraw its forces north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border, and dismantle its remaining military infrastructure in the south.

In late December, UN peacekeepers expressed concern over damage done by the Israeli military in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military said it was acting to eliminate any threat to Israel in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.

Qassem said Hezbollah had decided to be patient but there were limits. "We have said that we are giving the opportunity to prevent Israeli violations and to implement the agreement, and we will be patient," he said.

He stressed that Hezbollah could not wait for the 60-day ceasefire deadline to expire. "The resistance leader determines when to be patient, when to take the initiative, and when to respond," he said.
