TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon due to an Israeli attack, public attention has turned to the role and presence of their mission, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Established in March 1978, UNIFIL is a United Nations peacekeeping mission operating in southern Lebanon. The mission was created in response to regional conflict, with its original mandate including confirming Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, restoring international peace and security, and assisting the Lebanese government in regaining authority in the area.
Headquartered in Naqoura, Lebanon, UNIFIL consists of military personnel and civilian staff from various UN member states working together to carry out peacekeeping efforts in the region. As of March 30, 2026, the United Nations reported that the force currently consists of 7,505 peacekeepers from 47 countries.
