TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 34 people, including six children, have been killed following a wave of massive aerial strikes launched by the United States and Israel across Iran. According to Al Jazeera, the bombardment targeted a premier university and several residential districts after US President Donald Trump set a Tuesday, April 7, 2026, deadline for Tehran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump had previously warned that a refusal would trigger strikes on power plants and bridges, despite the fact that targeting civilian infrastructure constitutes a violation of international law.
Child Victims
The Fars news agency reported on Monday that the airstrikes claimed the lives of 23 people in Baharestan County, Tehran province, among them four girls and two boys under the age of 10.
In the city of Qom, at least five people were killed in a strike on a residential building, according to Morteza Heydari, the deputy governor for political and security affairs. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that six other individuals died in the southern port city of Bandar-e Lengeh. At least a dozen Iranian cities were targeted in the operation, including Bandar Abbas, Ahvaz, Mahshahr, Shiraz, Isfahan, and Karaj.
University Attacks
The joint US-Israeli strikes also hit Tehran’s Sharif University, one of Iran's most prestigious scientific institutions. Often compared to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, the campus suffered severe damage, with Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi reporting from Tehran that the mosque and laboratory complex were extensively destroyed.
"The Sharif area has witnessed other attacks, including one on a gas facility," Asadi noted, adding that civilian targets such as highways, power plants, and bridges were hit nationwide.
"Iran’s Ministry of Science and Technology told us that at least 30 universities have been hit since the beginning of the war on February 28," he said.
Iran's First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref, accused the US of deploying "bunker buster" bombs against the academic institution.
"The bunker-buster bomb attack on Sharif University is a symbol of Trump’s madness and ignorance," Aref stated in a post on X. "He fails to understand that Iran’s knowledge is not embedded in concrete to be destroyed by bombs; the true fortress is the will of our professors and elites," said Aref, himself a Stanford University engineering graduate.
