TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of the United States led by President Joe Biden stated that they are monitoring the situation after South Korea announced a martial law on Tuesday.

"The government is in touch with the ROK government and closely monitoring the situation," said a spokesperson for the US National Security Council to Anadolu as quoted by ANTARA on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, referring to the official name of South Korea.

Previously, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the implementation of a martial law which he deemed necessary to "protect the country from North Korean communist forces and to eliminate anti-country groups."

He claimed that the decision was made to expel pro-North Korean forces from South Korea and protect the liberal constitutional order.

Yoon dismissed any changes to his government's foreign policy commitments to meet international responsibilities.

Yoon, who has been struggling to push his government's agenda against the opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022, said he had no choice but to announce a martial law.

His decision came after the Democratic Party (DP), which is the opposition, pushed through a budget reduction bill in the parliamentary budget committee and filed for the impeachment of the state auditor and attorney general.

South Korean Defense Minister held a meeting with top commanders and urged increased vigilance. The Minister also ordered the military to remain on emergency duty.

Following the announcement, all political activities, gatherings, and demonstrations have been prohibited.

DP leader Lee Jae-myung condemned Yoon's announcement as an "unconstitutional" act and against the people.

"President Yoon announced a military emergency without reason," Lee said. "Tanks, armored vehicles, and armed soldiers will soon take over the country," he added.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the South Korean parliament succeeded in cancelling the declaration of the martial law. Under South Korean law, a martial law can be revoked by a majority vote in parliament, where the Democratic Party, which is the opposition, holds the majority.
