TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto and the Indonesian delegation met with Ambassador Jamieson Greer from the United States Trade Representative in Washington, DC, United States on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
During the meeting, the USTR appreciated Indonesia's offer, especially the steps taken to adjust domestic regulations regarding export and import.
"We appreciate the steps that Indonesia has taken. Currently, the U.S. is focused on expanding markets and strengthening the domestic economy, and we see great opportunities for cooperation with Indonesia," Greer said in an official statement on Friday, April 18, 2025.
In particular, Sarah Ellerman, Ambassador Greer, was assigned as Assistant USTR for Southeast Asia and the Pacific to coordinate technical discussions with Indonesia.
The Indonesian government proposed several offers. To balance the U.S. trade deficit, Indonesia plans to increase imports of goods from the United States, including oil and gas. Indonesia also plans to continue importing agricultural products from the U.S., such as soybeans and wheat. Additionally, Indonesia also offers to optimize cooperation in the strategic mineral sector and promote investment with a business-to-business scheme.
On the other hand, Airlangga also conveyed Indonesia's request to reduce export tariffs from Indonesia to the U.S., particularly for the top 20 main Indonesian products. This is because Indonesia's import tariffs have been higher than several competitor countries. Indonesia hopes to obtain lower tariffs so that exported products entering the U.S. market are more competitive.
"As the two largest democratic countries, Indonesia and the U.S. are open to mutually beneficial cooperation, especially cooperation to achieve fair and balanced trade," Airlangga said.
Indonesia and the U.S. agreed to conclude negotiations and bilateral cooperation discussions within the next 60 days. Airlangga conveyed that the governments of both countries have already drafted and agreed on the framework or reference agreement for cooperation.
