TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vietnam national team became the champion of the 2024 AFF Cup after defeating Thailand with an aggregate of 4-3. The victory was confirmed after winning 3-2 in the second leg of the final held at the Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok, Sunday, January 5, 2025.
The second leg match was fierce. Vietnam managed to score a goal when the match had only been going on for eight minutes through Pham Tuan Hai. The goal added pressure to the home team who had previously lost 1-2.
However, 20 minutes later, Thailand scored a goal through Ben Davis. The score of 1-1 was the end of the first half of the second leg of the final.
In the second half, Supachok Sarachat scored a goal after utilizing an assist from Ben Davis, so that the score changed to 2-1 for Thailand's advantage. The goal that occurred in the 64th minute gave hope to the team nicknamed the War Elephants to catch up on the one-goal deficit.
When Thailand tried to score their third goal in this match, they had to play with ten players because Weerathep Pomphan received a red card in the 74th minute.
The advantage in the number of players gave Vietnam an advantage. Kim Sang-sik's team continued to attack and finally managed to increase their lead in the 82nd minute. Pansa Hemviboon scored an own goal due to poor anticipation when facing the opponent's attack.
In the remaining time of the match, Thailand tried to score an additional goal. Masatada Ishii's squad continued to press Vietnam's defense. However, the efforts made failed.
Vietnam instead managed to score an additional goal in the 90+20' minute. Nguyen Hai Long's kick rolled into the Thai goal which was left by their goalkeeper, Patiwat Khammai, who also went forward during the corner kick.
Vietnam's success in winning the 2024 AFF Cup made them win the title in this tournament for the third time after 2008 and 2018. The Golden Star Warrior is the third team to collect the most trophies, below Singapore who won four times.
With this result, Thailand failed to score a hat-trick to become champions three times in a row, following their success in winning the Southeast Asian tournament in 2020 and 2022. Even so, they remain the team that has won the most trophies in this event with seven times.
The duel between the two teams in the 2024 AFF Cup final will be the third time they have faced each other in the final, after 2008 and 2022. At that time, Vietnam was able to beat Thailand with an aggregate of 3-2 to win their first title. However, two years ago, they lost with the same aggregate score.
