TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The year 2025 began with a number of extreme events on the mountain, ranging from the death of two climbers to the activation of a number of volcanoes. In the first decade of January 2025, several volcanoes in Indonesia recorded eruptions, signaling significant volcanic activity. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, such a trend is not surprising.
Reporting from various sources, here is a list of volcanoes that recorded eruptions during the period:
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was reported to have erupted again on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 12:11 WITA. This eruption also made Mount Lewotobi the first mountain to erupt in 2025.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) urged villagers around Mount Lewotobi Pria to be aware of the potential for lava flooding due to rain that flushed the area.
"Be aware of the potential for rain lava floods in rivers that head up at the top of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki if there is high intensity rain," said Emanuel Rofinus Bere, Observer of the Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Observation Post, in a statement received by Antara in Labuan Bajo on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
Mount Marapi
Mount Marapi, located in West Sumatra, erupted again and emitted an ash column as high as 1,000 meters on Saturday morning, January 4, 2025. Trian Ahmadi, one of the officers of the volcano monitoring post, noted that the eruption occurred at 09:43 WIB.
"The ash column was observed to be gray, thick, and tended to move towards the north and northeast," he said in an official statement after the incident.
Trian also stated that the mountain's eruption on the border of Agam and Tanah Datar regencies was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters. The duration of the eruption was recorded at around 1 minute 40 seconds.
"The eruption was still ongoing when the report was made," he explained at 09.51 WIB on the same day.
Trian confirmed that the status of Mount Marapi is still on Alert. The monitoring team urges the public, tourists, and climbers to stay away from areas within a 3-kilometer radius of the Verbeek crater.
Mount Semeru
The eruption of Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang Regency, East Java, continued until Wednesday morning, January 8, 2025, according to observations by officials of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
Mount Semeru Observation Post officer Mukdas Sofian reported that at 02:47 a.m., the volcano spewed volcanic ash as high as about 1 kilometer from its peak. "Recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 165 seconds," Mukdas said, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.
The Geological Agency noted that this eruption was the 14th time and was the biggest activity of Mount Semeru in the last 24 hours. About three hours earlier, the observation team recorded an eruption with a height of ash ejection of about 600 meters above the summit, or 4,276 meters above sea level.
With an altitude of 3,676 meters above sea level, Mount Semeru is still on alert status. Therefore, the Geological Agency provides a number of recommendations, including prohibiting the public from carrying out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan within a radius of 8 kilometers from the peak or eruption center.
In addition, the public is also prohibited from carrying out activities within a radius of 500 meters from the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak. The public is also advised not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater or peak of Semeru Mountain due to the risk of incandescent rock ejection.
