TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent import tariff for all countries shipping goods to the U.S. Trump referred to the new tariff as reciprocal tariffs and stated that it would take effect three days after the Republican Party president's announcement.
The White House's official statement mentioned that Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs to strengthen the international economy and protect domestic workers in the United States. In the White House Fact Sheet published on whitehouse.gov on April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that foreign trade and economic practices have created a national emergency.
Some countries will be subject to higher specific or reciprocal tariffs of more than 10 percent. Indonesia is one of the countries affected by these tariffs. According to the graph released by the White House, Indonesia ranks eighth on the list of countries facing increased U.S. tariffs, at a rate of 32 percent.
So, when will the new tariffs from the Trump administration take effect? The White House website announced that the implementation date of Trump's tariffs will be divided into two stages.
In the first stage, the 10 percent tariff for all countries will take effect on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 12:01 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), equivalent to 11:01 PM on April 5, 2025, in Indonesia.
After that, the special tariffs intended for several countries, including Indonesia, will take effect starting on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 12:01 EDT or 11:01 PM in Indonesia. Trump imposed these special tariffs because the U.S. has a trade deficit with these countries, including Indonesia.
Trump announced the new tariffs in the Rose Garden area of the White House on Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 2025, local time. In his speech, the president of the Republican Party presented a list of countries and the reciprocal tariff rates. According to the White House's Instagram post, Indonesia ranks eighth on the list of countries facing increased U.S. tariffs, at a rate of 32 percent.
About 60 countries will be subject to half of the tariffs they impose on the U.S. The highest reciprocal tariff country is Cambodia, at 49 percent. Trump explained the imposition of retaliatory tariffs because some countries were deemed to have imposed tariffs on U.S. imports first.
Vietnam will face a 46 percent reciprocal tariff. According to Trump, the country has had fair negotiations with America. In his speech at the White House, Trump said Vietnam has been charging a 90 percent tariff on American goods.
