TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said that United States President Donald Trump had invited him for a meeting in the US around September or October 2025.
“He said maybe around September, October,” Prabowo said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The invitation came during discussions over import tariffs. At the time, the two leaders had a phone call on Tuesday, July 15.
Prabowo joked that he was slightly hesitant about the invitation because Trump might ask him to play golf.
“My golf game is very bad. I need private golf lessons. It used to be good, but now I can't play as well,” he said while laughing.
During their phone call, Prabowo described Trump as a tough negotiator. He said that although the negotiation was intense, both leaders eventually reached a mutual understanding.
“I kept negotiating. I told him that he is also a tough negotiator,” Prabowo said.
As a result, the two countries agreed to set the import tariff for US goods entering Indonesia at 0 percent. Meanwhile, Indonesia will face a 19 percent tariff when exporting to the US.
Prabowo acknowledged that the 0 percent tariff could reduce state revenue. However, he stressed that the government had assessed all potential impacts of the deal.
“We are also thinking about what is important to me, which is my people. The most important thing for me is to protect our workers,” he said.
“Even though we also have a stance. This is our offer, we cannot give more. But the most important thing for me is to ensure the safety of our workers.”
Under the agreement, Indonesia also agreed to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft. Prabowo explained that this acquisition was part of the government’s effort to revitalize Garuda Indonesia.
“We are determined, I am determined to expand Garuda. And for that, we need new aircraft. I think there is no problem because we need it, and they want to sell. Boeing aircraft are also quite good. We also still have Airbus,” he said.
Trump announced the trade agreement on his Truth Social account on Tuesday, July 15. He said Indonesia would face a 19 percent import tariff on goods entering the US.
In return, Indonesia agreed to buy US energy worth US$15 billion, agricultural products worth US$4.5 billion, and the 50 Boeing planes, most of them Boeing 777s.
