TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Benedikt Emmenegger, a 46-year-old tourist from Switzerland, reportedly fell while climbing Mount Rinjani on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. Although he is in stable condition, he sustained a broken bone and is awaiting evacuation.
Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Management Agency (BTNGR), Yarman, stated that Emmenegger began his ascent on Tuesday, July 15, with four companions, including his child, via the Sembalun trekking route. The accident occurred during their descent towards Lake Segara Anak.
"The hiker descended from the peak, from Pelawangan (Sembalun), and fell on the route to the lake, possibly due to a rock or something else; we are not sure yet," Yarman explained when met at his office on Wednesday afternoon.
According to him, Emmenegger has insurance coverage, and the evacuation by helicopter is likely. "But we need to see if the helicopter can land at the location where he fell," Yarman added.
He could not yet confirm if the fall occurred on particularly difficult terrain, stating, "All terrains in the mountain are difficult; we have to be ready and careful."
According to Yarman's latest update, the BTNGR evacuation team and the Edelweis Medical Health Center (EMHC) from Sembalun have moved towards the accident site, and a helicopter has also been dispatched.
Meanwhile, Head of Operations and Alert Section of the Mataram Search and Rescue (SAR) Office, Saidar Rahmanjaya, confirmed that the SAR Kayangan Rescue Team is en route to the location.
"This team is then followed by additional personnel from the Mataram SAR Office to strengthen the evacuation efforts," Saidar said.
The SAR team is equipped with a range of gear, including mountaineering equipment, communication devices, medical supplies, evacuation tools, operational vehicles, and other support.
"This rescue operation involves coordinated efforts across various agencies and elements, such as the BTNGR, the Indonesian Military, the National Police, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the East Lombok SAR Unit, EMHC, Rinjani Squad, Fire Department, Rinjani Volunteers, porters, guides, and other relevant parties," Saidar elaborated.
"The entire joint team is currently working together to reach the victim's location and provide assistance as soon as possible."
As of the writing of this report, there is no further information on Benedikt Emmenegger's exact condition. The joint SAR team continues to make strenuous efforts to evacuate him from the challenging and steep terrain.
This incident involving the Swiss hiker followed closely on the heels of another fall on Mount Rinjani involving Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins. Her death sparked controversy among the Brazilian public due to the perceived slow evacuation process.
