TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Monday, August 11, 2025, President Dina Ercilla Boluarte Zegarra, the first female President of the Republic of Peru, made an official state visit to Indonesia.

She was warmly received by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the iconic Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, underscoring the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

President Boluarte’s arrival was marked by a grand ceremonial welcome featuring 17 motorcade troops, 60 cavalry troops, an honor guard, and approximately 3,000 students lining the streets waving both Indonesian and Peruvian flags.

The formal reception took place on the west side of Merdeka Palace, highlighting the significance of this historic visit.

Profile of President Dina Boluarte, Peru’s First Female Leader

Born on May 31, 1962, in Chalhuanca, a small town in Peru, Dina Boluarte comes from humble beginnings. She overcame numerous challenges to pursue higher education, earning a law degree from San Martin de Porres University in Lima in 1992.

She further obtained a master’s degree specializing in notarial law and civil registration, building a strong foundation for her legal career.

Before entering the political arena, Boluarte served as a legal advisor at the National Registry for Identification and Civil Status in Santiago de Surco for nearly 15 years, starting in 2007. Alongside her professional career, she managed family life, raising two sons.

Boluarte’s political journey began relatively late. After joining the Peru Libre Political Party in 2017, she initially ran unsuccessfully for local office.

However, her dedication and political acumen led to her election as Vice President in 2021, serving alongside President Pedro Castillo. In her role as Vice President, she focused on critical social issues such as poverty reduction and improving educational access.

Following the political turmoil resulting in the impeachment and arrest of President Pedro Castillo in December 2022, Dina Boluarte assumed the presidency, making history as Peru’s first female president.

Prior to this, she served as Minister of Development and Social Inclusion, spearheading several social welfare programs.

President Boluarte’s visit to Indonesia signifies Peru’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in trade, culture, and international cooperation. Both leaders expressed intentions to collaborate on sustainable development, education exchange programs, and economic partnerships that benefit their countries.
