TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore has retained its position as the country with the most powerful passport in the world, according to the 2025 Henley Passport Index. This year, Singapore stands alone at the pinnacle, having previously shared the top spot with Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
The index, the original and authoritative ranking of all passports worldwide, assesses the travel freedom afforded to citizens of each country. The index uses comprehensive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and research conducted by the Henley & Partners research team. It ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access visa-free, or where visa-on-arrival, e-visa, or similar travel facilitation arrangements are available.
Singapore has the most powerful passport
As the nation with the most powerful passport globally, Singapore passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 195 out of 227 global destinations, a slight increase of only one destination compared to the previous year. This ranking is a testament to Singapore's robust international relations, efficient consular services, and strategic foreign policy, as reported by Travel and Tour World.
Japan, a previous co-holder of the top spot, has slipped one position to second place in the latest index. Japanese passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 193 destinations. This minor shift in ranking can be attributed to developments in diplomatic negotiations and changes in visa agreements with major countries. This year, Japanese passport holders can access visa-free travel to China, after years of restrictions imposed by global travel limitations.
The third place is occupied by six countries, namely Finland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Spain. Passport holders from these nations enjoy visa-free access to 192 destinations.
The fourth place: Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden have visa-free access to 191 destinations. The fifth Place: Belgium, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom offer visa-free access to 190 destinations. The sixth place: Australia and Greece provide visa-free access to 189 destinations. The seventh Place: Canada, Malta, and Poland offer visa-free access to 188 destinations.
Czechia and Hungary are in eighth place with visa-free access to 187 destinations. Meanwhile, the United States and Estonia are in ninth with visa-free access to 186 destinations. The tenth place: Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates have visa-free access to 185 destinations.
Indonesia is ranked 66th
According to the Henley Global page, Indonesia ranks 66th in the 2025 Henley Passport Index. Indonesian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 76 destinations globally.
In contrast, neighboring Southeast Asian countries show higher global mobility. Malaysia, for instance, ranks 12th, granting its citizens visa-free access to 183 destinations. Brunei Darussalam is ranked 20th with visa-free access to 166 destinations.
Thailand surpasses Indonesia by five ranks, securing the 61st position with visa-free access to 82 destinations. The Philippines ranks 75th, with its citizens enjoying visa-free access to 67 destinations. Vietnam ranks 91st, with visa-free access to 51 destinations.
