TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Wukirsari Tourism Village in Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, received the Best Tourism Village 2024 award from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Wukirsari Tourism Village is one of the 55 best tourism villages in the world in 2024.
The announcement was made in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on Thursday, November 14, 2024, local time, and broadcast on the official UNWTO YouTube channel. Wukirsari Tourism Village managed to beat famous villages from different countries of the world.
The evaluation of the best village was based on natural and cultural resources, as well as innovative and transformative actions and commitments for tourism development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"This award is a global recognition of the tourism village in Bantul. There are many heritages there, and Wukirsari has managed to preserve these heritages, including a sustainable environment," said Bantul Regency Secretary Agus Budiraharja on Friday, November 15, 2024.
Agus said that Imogiri's Wukirsari is not unknown to local and foreign tourists all this time. This is because there is a well-known center for the hand-drawn batik of Giriloyo, which continues to thrive.
"The Giriloyo batik craft in Wukirsari Imogiri has been passed down through generations with the highest number of batik artisans. Then there are the crafts of tatah sungging and keris, as well as the royal tombs and exotic village scenes," said Agus.
One of the managers of Kampung Batik Giriloyo in Wukirsari Tourism Village, Bahtiar, is optimistic that Wukirsari can be listed as one of the 55 best villages in the world according to UNWTO. "Wukirsari has two intangible cultural heritage, namely wayang (shadow puppet) and batik," he said.
Bahtiar said that there are 300 indicators in the World Tourism Village Award. These include legal documents, regulations, and other required evidence.
Before being nominated and finally making it to the list of the best villages in the world, Wukirsari Tourism Village had previously been the champion of the advanced tourism village in the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in 2023. Apart from Wukirsari Tourism Village, Jatiluwih Tourism Village in Tabanan, Bali also represented Indonesia and received an award at the event.
