Winner of the Local Entrepreneurship Champion Award presented by the Global Center on Adaptation at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Aliet Green, a woman-owned enterprise from Yogyakarta, supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), has been recognized as the winner in the Local Entrepreneurship category 2024 Local Adaptation Champions Awards, acording to the press release received by Tempo on Monday, December 23, 2024.

The awards were announced at the sidelines of the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, celebrating exemplary locally led efforts to combat climate change and build resilience in vulnerable communities.

The Local Adaptation Champions Awards, organized by the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), received 870 applications across four categories: Food Security, Water Security, Local Entrepreneurship, and Urban Adaptation Solutions. Each winner was awarded €15,000 to support future initiatives, along with sponsorship from the Adaptation Fund.

Aliet Green was honoured for its innovative approach to empower over 1,500 smallholder farmers—most of them women—affected by prolonged droughts and floods in the Kulon Progo region. By introducing climate-smart technologies, such as the 3R (Recharge-Retain-Reuse) water management system and more resilient crops like dwarf coconut trees, the enterprise has safeguarded 500 hectares of land and enhanced the climate resilience of local farming practices.

"We are here to equip farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to adapt to an increasingly unpredictable climate,” said Aliet Green CEO Lastiana Yulandari. “Our aim is to create a future where sustainable farming benefits both people and the planet. Empowering farmers, especially women and those with disabilities, has been our priority.”

Local farmers and facilitators participated in water management workshops and received regenerative dwarf coconut seedlings to plant.

The Tropical Landscape Grant Fund (TLGF)

Aliet Green’s success has been supported in part by the Tropical Landscape Grant Fund (TLGF), a UNEP initiative  launched in 2021. With funding from Global Affairs Canada, TLGF builds on the success of the Tropical Landscape Finance Facility, which issued Indonesia’s first sustainability green bond in 2017.

The TLGF focuses on empowering women-driven sustainable land-use enterprises by providing technical assistance and grants to enhance their capacities in project management, gender equality, climate-smart agriculture, and financial literacy. To date, TLGF has selected seven out of 22 projects, supporting women-led initiatives to become investment-ready while promoting gender equity and sustainable development in Indonesia’s land-use sector.

“As the climate crisis intensifies, it will become more and more important to find solutions that work from an economic, business and environmental perspective," said Ivo Mulder Head (ai) UNEP Climate Finance Unit. “I’m very pleased to hear that Aliet Green, who’s supported through the Tropical Landscapes Grant Fund (which is hosted by the UNEP Climate Finance Unit) received a climate change adaptation award during the latest COP 29 in Baku and is powering ahead to work on real solutions for smallholder farmers in Indonesia”.

The Local Adaptation Champions Awards emphasizes the importance of grassroots innovation in addressing the escalating climate crisis, providing a blueprint for sustainable and inclusive solutions that benefit communities worldwide.
