TEMPO.CO, Solo - The Indonesia National Team is gearing up for its third match in the 2024 AFF Cup after a 3-3 draw against Laos at Manahan Stadium Solo on Thursday night, December 12, 2024.
The Garuda team will play against Vietnam next on Sunday, December 15.
With only a three-day break, the Indonesian national team immediately rushed to Vietnam the day after their home match against Laos. Indonesia’s coach, Shin Tae-yong, expressed criticism about the tight match schedule.
"The 2024 AFF Cup schedule is indeed very tight. It is not feasible to have only a three-day gap between matches. This is practically killing the players," said the South Korean coach at a press conference after the match against Laos on Thursday night.
According to him, there should be at least a four-day break between matches to reserve a whole day for travel purposes.
"In fact, after the Myanmar match ended (Monday, December 9), we took a transit stop in Kuala Lumpur before heading to Jakarta and arrived in Solo after taking a 16-hour journey. And the same goes for today. The match concluded today, and tomorrow (Friday, December 13) we have to depart for Vietnam," he said.
The schedule, he said, is not only vital to maintain players’ performance during the following match but also to prevent injuries. Therefore, the coach urged the AFF Cup organizers to consider breaks for the players.
"We must also consider how to provide the football fans watching the AFF Cup match with the optimal performance from the players,” he said.
The Garuda squad will face a challenging game against Vietnam next Sunday, as the hosting team already has a three-day headstart. The Golden Warriors last played earlier this Monday.
Shin Tae-yong's team will arrive in Vietnam as the current leader of Group B standings with four points from two matches. Before a draw with Laos, Indonesia defeated Myanmar with a 1-0 score on Monday.
Meanwhile, Vietnam is in the runner-up position with three points obtained in its first home match against Laos with a 4-1 victory. The Philippines followed with one point, while the fourth and fifth positions were occupied by Myanmar and Laos, respectively.
