TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the latest earthquake occurred in South Papua this Sunday morning, November 10, 2024. An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 occurred precisely at 04:20 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) or 06:20 local time.
According to the BMKG data, the epicenter of this earthquake was on land, 69 kilometers northwest of Asmat. It had a depth of 10 kilometers. There is no explanation regarding the impact of this earthquake, but the impact map from BMKG (shakemap) shows vibrations felt on the surface up to scale III or IV MMI.
On a scale of III MMI, the earthquake can be felt inside a house as if there is a passing truck. At scale IV MMI, the earthquake can be felt by many people indoors, with doors and windows rattling.
Throughout last Saturday, BMKG recorded four earthquakes with noticeable tremors. Starting from a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Buol, Central Sulawesi, at 09:53 WIB, to a magnitude 3.1 earthquake in East Luwu, South Sulawesi, at 21:11 WIB.
Among them were also a magnitude 4:9 earthquake in Manokwari, West Papua, and a magnitude 4.1 earthquake in West Halmahera, North Maluku. The strongest tremors from these earthquakes reached scale III-IV MMI, specifically in Buol. The epicenter of this earthquake was in the sea.
