TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Avocado is a nutrient-rich fruit that comes in several varieties with different characteristics. From the shape and skin color to the flesh texture, each type has its own uniqueness.
As quoted by Healthline, here are the most popular types of avocados around the world:
1. Choquette Avocado
Choquette has smooth and shiny skin with watery flesh that comes out when the fruit is cut. This variety originates from South Florida.
2. Lula Avocado
This avocado is plentifully harvested during the summer, has less natural oil, and contains more water than other varieties. It is resistant to cold temperatures but very vulnerable to fungus. Lula grows to a weight of around 450 grams.
3. Hass Avocado
Hass is the most popular variety, available all year round, with a buttery, nutty taste and a round shape. Its skin changes from dark green to a purplish black as it ripens.
4. Reed Avocado
Reed is only available during the summer months. Reed avocados have a lighter, smoother taste and are the size of a softball. When ripe, their skin remains green, contrary to other varieties.
5. Pinkerton Avocado
Pinkerton has an elongated shape, rough skin that is easy to peel, and small seeds inside the tender flesh. This variety can grow between 225-680 grams.
6. Gwen Avocado
Gwen is similar to Hass avocados in taste and appearance. It is a larger Guatemalan variety with thick, dark green, easily peelable skin.
7. Maluma Avocado
Maluma is a dark purple avocado found in the 1990s in South Africa. This variety grows slowly, but its trees produce abundant fruit.
How to Choose Avocado
Avocados are generally similar in nutritional content, regardless of variety. All avocados are dense in calories and high in healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Florida avocados are known as the lightest because of their lower fat content compared to the popular Hass avocados. However, the overall nutritional difference between the two is small. Overall, avocados are highly nutritious, and all types offer similar health benefits.
As cited by Food Data Central, avocados are a highly nutritious fruit. Avocados are a source of folate, potassium, and healthy fats, as well as vitamins K, C, and E. They also contain small amounts of B vitamins and minerals.
