1. Japan Faces Worst Flu Outbreak in 25 Years
Japan is currently grappling with its worst influenza outbreak in 25 years, with infection rates reaching record highs unseen since 1999.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, approximately 317,812 cases were reported in 5,000 designated medical institutions during the last week of December 2024. As reported by Travel Weekly Asia, this translates to an average of 64.39 patients per facility, more than double the warning threshold of 30.
2. Indonesia's Ministry of Finance Cancels 2025 Scholarship Program Due to Budget Cut
Based on President Prabowo Subianto's instruction to each ministry and agency to implement budget savings, the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) has to cancel the Ministerial Scholarship offer for 2025. This decision was also the result of the Leadership Meeting of the Financial Education and Training Agency (BPPK) on January 31, 2025.
"We sincerely apologize for the cancellation of the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) Ministerial Scholarship offer for 2025. As a follow-up to this cancellation, the scholarship registration process has been discontinued effective from the date this announcement is issued," said Wahyu, as quoted by Antara.
3. Indonesia Orders Halt to Project Linked to Trump over Water Issue, State Media Says
Indonesia has ordered property firm PT MNC Land (KPIG.JK) to halt development of a Lido tourism project affiliated with U.S. President Donald Trump over water management and environmental issues, its environment ministry said on Thursday.
The 3,000 hectare (7413.16 acres) integrated resort is located about 60 km (37.3 miles) south of the capital Jakarta and is home to a new Trump golf course, which started offering membership last year.
