TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The engine of an American Airlines jet caught fire after landing in Denver on Thursday, March 13, 2025. The incident led to the evacuation of the aircraft's passengers using the plane’s slides, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which was cited by Reuters.

The airline said all 172 passengers and six crew members were able to exit the aircraft. Twelve passengers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

American Airlines Flight 1006 from Colorado Springs on a Boeing 737-800 was diverted to Denver at around 5:15 p.m. local time from its original destination after the crew reported engine vibrations.

Several dramatic videos of passengers standing on the aircraft's wing before being evacuated as smoke emerged from the engine were uploaded on social media.

American Airlines stated that the aircraft landed safely despite the engine issues. The 13-year-old aircraft is equipped with two CFM56 engines manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between GE and Safran.

The FAA stated that they will investigate the incident. A spokesperson for Denver International Airport mentioned that the fire had been extinguished and flight operations were continuing as usual.

Boeing declined to comment and requested inquiries to be directed to American Airlines and the investigators.

The engine fire incident is the latest in a series of major aviation incidents that have raised questions about the safety of air travel in the U.S. On January 29, a collision occurred between an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter, resulting in the deaths of 67 people.

Last month, a Delta Air Lines regional jet overturned during landing at Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada, amid windy weather following a snowstorm. A total of 18 people were injured out of 80 on board. All passengers and crew survived the incident.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom and Delta CEO Ed Bastian on Tuesday cited air crashes and weather events as contributing factors to the decline in air travel in the U.S. The decrease in air passengers is also due to increased economic uncertainty.
