TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chair of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Anindya Bakrie said the trade war between the United States (US) and China and other countries could bring opportunities for the Indonesian economy. He said Indonesia could increase exports of a number of commodities to the US that have so far been supplied by China.

"America needs critical minerals from us, that could be the entry point," said Anindya after becoming the main speaker at the Mayapada Group Executive Gathering 2025 at Mayapada Tower 2 Jakarta, last Tuesday in a written statement, quoted Saturday, February 8, 2025.

According to him, Indonesia and the US currently do not have a free trade agreement (FTA). However, the opportunity for the agreement will occur in the future. "But that could be a possibility because President Donald Trump values bilateral trade," he said.

Therefore, he said, Indonesia could take advantage of these opportunities amid the China-US trade war. The trade war has the potential to depress the economies of both countries.

On the other hand, Anindya added, in the midst of the global economic slowdown, Indonesia and India could be a source of new growth. "When in Davos it was said that they (the Director of the World Economic Forum) were looking for a new growth story," said Anindya. This opportunity refers to the opportunity for Indonesia and India to become Asian countries with high economic growth.

The World Bank estimates that China's economy will grow to 4.5 percent in 2025. Meanwhile, the US economy is still growing at around 2.3 percent until the end of 2024 or still below the world average of around 3 percent.

According to Anindya Bakrie, Indonesia and India tend to be stable in recording economic growth in the range of 5 percent. "So, they (WEF) think, this can be a mainstay of growth in the world. But of course we have our own targets, not just growing, but growing with inclusivity," he said.
