TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) together with the Indonesia Technology Alliance (ITA) announced that the lower band 6 GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi networks will be allocated for the country.
Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital, as reported by Antara, stated that this 6 GHz spectrum not only significantly increases Wi-Fi broadband capacity and improves connectivity quality, but also supports the development of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 which offer higher speeds and lower latency that has the potential to strengthen Indonesia's competitiveness in the digital technology sector in Southeast Asia.
"By implementing this regulation for Wi-Fi, we are not only improving connectivity, we are also at the same time strengthening Indonesia's position as a digital leader in the region," he said on Friday, February 7, 2025 at the Launch of the 6 GHz Spectrum by the Indonesia Technology Alliance (ITA) in Jakarta.
Meutya also revealed that the 6 GHz spectrum allows wireless connections to operate at speeds of up to 46 gigabits per second (Gbps). This technology can increase Wi-Fi speeds while making it more efficient and sustainable. This policy is expected to bring great benefits to the business sector, society, and public services in Indonesia.
What is Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7
#Wi-Fi 6E
Reporting from XL Satu Fiber on Saturday, February 9, 2025, Wi-Fi 6E is a technology that uses the 802.11ax standard for wireless connections, but with expanded coverage to the latest frequency band, namely 6 GHz. Meanwhile, the letter "E" in this technology stands for "Extension".
WiFi 6E offers up to 14 additional channels with a width of 80 MHz or 7 additional channels with a width of 160 MHz. This makes it ideal for various applications, such as smoother VR experiences and uninterrupted HD streaming. With more channels available, the spectrum becomes wider and interference between networks is reduced, especially in dense environments such as offices.
The 6 GHz wireless band also provides twice as many high-bandwidth channels as the 5 GHz band. With this capacity, users can more freely access applications such as 4K and 8K streaming, high-quality video conferencing, and games that support virtual reality technology.
#WI-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 7 is the latest generation after Wi-Fi 6E which continues to operate on the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands, and is backward compatible with older devices. This technology offers higher speeds with various superior features, such as
- a 320MHz channel bandwidth that is twice as large as Wi-Fi 6E
- Multi-Link operation that combines multiple bands into one faster and more stable connection
- Improvements in reducing network interference
Currently, several Wi-Fi 7 routers are already available on the market, such as TP-Link Deco BE85 and Archer BE800. Both routers have been registered with the Wi-Fi Alliance as consumer devices with the Wi-Fi 7 standard.
Ismail as Secretary General of Komdigi stated that this technology can increase internet speeds up to four times compared to current connections. And through this collaboration, ITA seeks to accelerate the use of more efficient technology.
They will ensure that Wi-Fi 6 GHz can be widely accessed by the Indonesian people, encourage industry to innovate in utilizing Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, and support balanced spectrum management between industry needs and public interests.
Ismail also explained that there are three main impacts of adopting the 6 GHz spectrum, including:
- First, increased speed is the main factor.
- Second, Wi-Fi is a service that is widely used by the public and is free license so that it does not require additional costs for use at home.
- Third, various latest applications, including artificial intelligence (AI) require high-speed connections.
With the presence of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, according to Ismail, Indonesia is now entering an era of technology that has been adopted globally.
