TEMPO.CO, JakartaJapan, the world’s most popular destination, is tightening visa slots for Filipino tourists to manage the surge in arrivals from the country. Filipino visitors to Japan have surged recently due to the weakening yen.

A travel agency official in Manila said the Japanese embassy in the Philippines has reduced the daily visa application limit by about 50%, according to Kyodo News Agency.

The embassy is now advising Filipino tourists to apply for their visas up to two months in advance, the Mainichi reported.

Filipino tourists usually apply for Japanese visas through official agencies.

Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization showed that 818,700 Filipinos visited Japan in 2024, marking a 31.6% increase from the previous year and a record high for the second straight year.

In Southeast Asia, the Philippines ranked second after Thailand in terms of the number of visitors to Japan in 2024, but recorded the highest growth rate.

Insiders attribute the surge in Filipino tourists to factors such as the weakening yen and increased direct flights by low-cost carriers.
