TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry has received a two-year investment plan proposal from Apple worth US$100 million or around Rp1.58 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,800) in Indonesia.
The investment plan increased tenfold from Apple’s initial Rp158 billion accessory and component factory plan in Bandung, ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif said.
"We have received Apple's proposal for a US$100 million investment on November 19, 2024," Febri said, as quoted from a written statement on Thursday, November 21, 2024, adding that the ministry will hold a meeting today in response to Apple’s proposal.
The ministry, however, will still demand Apple to follow through with its Rp300 billion investment pledge to comply with domestic component level (TKDN) regulations.
The Minister of Industry stated that in 2023, Apple had made a profit of Rp30 trillion from the sales of its products in Indonesia. According to him, with such a huge profit, Apple should be able to invest proportionately in the country.
Agus mentioned that based on an audit, Apple's investment value in Indonesia is still Rp300 billion short.
Previously, Apple had committed to investing in Indonesia through innovation by establishing its fourth Apple Academy in Indonesia, with an investment value of Rp1.71 trillion. From this commitment, the Ministry of Industry stated that Apple has only realized an investment of Rp1.48 trillion, still lacking about Rp240 billion.
Agus said the TKDN requirement aims to provide fairness to other technology industries that have established domestic manufacturing facilities in Indonesia.
Prior to this, Febri said that Apple's management had sent a letter to Minister Agung Gumiwang Kartasasmita to request an audience after the ban for the iPhone 16 series. "They have contacted the minister through a letter and requested a meeting," said Febri on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
Responding to the letter, Febri said the ministry wants Apple to keep their side of the bargain and “do something concrete” about the previously agreed TKDN deal.
