The Indonesian National Navy Base in Dumai thwarted the attempt to depart 17 non-procedural Indonesian migrant workers and 24 foreign nationals from Bangladesh. They were about to depart by sea from Dumai, Riau, to Malaysia on Saturday, November 30, 2024. While nabbing the human smuggling attempt, the navy also arrested two suspected smugglers.
The two alleged perpetrators of the human smuggling crimes are identified as YN, 43 years old, from Bangkinang, and BH, 39 years old, from Dumai.
The Operational Officer of the Indonesian National Navy Base in Dumai, Lieutenant Colonel Priatno, said they received preliminary information about illegal smuggling activities involving dozens of migrant worker candidates and dozens of foreign nationals from Dumai to Malaysia.
He said the perpetrators utilized the sea route for smuggling through the coast of Pelintung Beach, Medang Kampai, Dumai City, Riau. "The team was divided into two, a marine team and a ground team," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
The marine team pursued using the Bengkalis Marine Security Patrol speedboat. Meanwhile, the ground team, accompanied by a joint task force, mobilized from Bengkalis to the coast of Pelintung Beach.
During the pursuit, he stated, the ground team identified a black Xenia car with license plate number B 1842 PIZ that disembarked passengers in the coastal area. He mentioned there were at least ten foreign nationals from Bangladesh who were to be smuggled illegally by sea to Malaysia.
Priatno said the suspected car was operated by the alleged perpetrator identified as YN. "The ground team immediately coordinated with the marine team to perform blockades," he said.
Shortly after, the ground team conducted a sweep around the location where Bangladeshi foreign nationals were dropped off. As a result, he said, the ground team again found a total of 17 non-procedural migrant worker candidates and 14 Bangladeshi foreign nationals to be smuggled to the neighboring country.
The joint Indonesian Navy task force also apprehended a suspected perpetrator identified as BH, who served as a beach boy around the sweep location. Currently, both perpetrators have been handed over to the Dumai Police Resort for further legal processing.
"Meanwhile, 17 migrant worker candidates and 24 Bangladeshi foreign nationals were handed over to P4MI Dumai and Immigration Class I TPI Dumai for data collection,” he said.
