TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Penglipuran Village in Bangli, Bali, sees a surge in visitors during the New Year period. The village, one of the top 54 tourist villages in the world according to UN Tourism 2023, welcomed around 9,000 tourists per day last year despite having a capacity of only 2,000 visitors.
To accommodate the influx of tourists this year, Penglipuran Village is preparing a new bamboo forest area for the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2025. The bamboo forest is sacred to the local community because of its historical significance.
I Wayan Sumiarsa, Manager of Penglipuran Tourism Village, said in Denpasar on Tuesday that the new area will help maintain the charm and sustainability of the village. In addition to accommodating more visitors, the village authorities will also ensure that the bamboo forest is properly managed and preserved. The bamboo forest, which covers 45 hectares, will be developed as an area that emphasizes social, historical and ecological values.
"We continue to innovate, and the bamboo forest is one of those efforts. This nature that we are taking care of is a 45-hectare conservation area that was agreed upon by the Penglipuran community," he said.
Cultural Attractions in Penglipuran Village
The idea to optimize the bamboo forest in Penglipuran Village came after the village management and community conducted a study and learned that Penglipuran Village is the only village that has a bamboo forest that can thrive on flat land. With the increasing number of visitors, innovation was seen as essential.
"We are preparing new facilities in the bamboo forest, and just as importantly, for the Christmas and New Year period in 2025, we will be holding cultural attractions with the Yowana youth on December 28 and January 1, which we expect to attract large crowds," said Sumiarsa.
Aside from enjoying their time in the forest area, visitors who purchase tickets ranging from Rp25,000 to Rp50,000 will also be able to watch the Beberongan, a traditional dance performed by the youth of Bangli.
Utilizing the Bamboo Forest
Prof. I Nyoman Sunarta, a tourism academic and head of the Ph.D. program in tourism at Udayana University, said the village's decision to open up the bamboo forest area was a good move. However, he emphasized that the main reason for tourists to visit is to experience the village's architecture: the layout of the villagers' houses and the village's unique bamboo characteristics.
Sunarta said that it was not enough for the bamboo forest to simply be a path for tourists to walk through. He suggested that the village management could innovate by creating bamboo processing exhibitions or offering visitors the opportunity to plant bamboo seedlings as part of a future initiative.
"Most importantly, the bamboo houses must remain the focal point - their roofs, their cleanliness - and since bamboo is the icon of the village, the bamboo forest should be maximized as a new attraction. Right now, the attraction isn't fully developed. To make it sustainable, the community could have exhibitions on how to make bamboo into new bamboo houses, which would also allow tourists to gain knowledge," he said.
According to Indonesia.travel, the bamboo forest covers about 40% of the total area of Penglipuran village. Locals believe that the bamboo forest is linked to the origins of the village's settlement. Besides its historical and aesthetic value, the bamboo forest serves as a water catchment area, protecting the village from floods and droughts.
