TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A team of students from Taman Rama Intercultural School Bali has won the Change It Challenge organized by Monash University Indonesia. The winning team will travel to Melbourne, Australia, in February 2025 to compete in the global finals against other international finalists.
“The Change It Challenge aims to encourage and inspire students to find solutions to the challenges of our time,” said Nicholaas Sosrowibowo, Senior Regional Manager for International Student Recruitment at Monash University and chair of the judging panel, in a written statement on Thursday.
The Bali team, comprising Anna Melisa Klein, Neyja Darsana, and Carissa Michellytha M.K., presented their project addressing the threats of pollution and waste to Bali’s oceans and ecosystems. Their proposed solution focuses on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, including installing waste bins and providing waste management tools on three Bali beaches.
The recycled waste will be distributed to partner organizations to be processed into new products, promoting a sustainable waste management cycle. According to Nicholaas, the competition provides students with an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on global challenges and contribute to the progress of future generations.
In the Indonesian finals, seven teams were challenged to tackle various global issues, showcasing not only their awareness of pressing topics but also their ability to collaborate with peers across the country.
Other finalists included:
- Aldrick Wong, Hanna Tan, and Amanda Taslim from SMA Santo Nicholas.
- Michelle Alexandra Setiyawan and Patrice Emmanuel Hendra from Sekolah Kristen Cita Hati Timur Surabaya.
- Jocelyne Feng and Yessemel Ananda Gozella from Sekolah Bina Bangsa Malang.
- Rebecca, Kiana, and Jaden from SMAK 8 Penabur Tanjung Duren.
- Kevin, Vedarth, and Richard from Singapore National Academy.
- Janice Ciam, Maria Andrea Barlian, and Veronika Wilis Pramoda Nirmala from Sekolah Pelita Harapan Sentul.
The Change It Challenge is designed to engage and inspire high school students to create meaningful change in the areas of climate action and community development. Participants are encouraged to integrate education, research, innovation, and cultural transformation into their presentations, aiming to make a global impact.
